As of January 2021, The National Bureau for Statistics (NBS) recorded that consumers paid more to refill 12.5kg cylinders of cooking gas as opposed to the statistics recorded in October and December 2020 respectively. The report recorded an increase in the price of refilling Liquefied Petroleum Gas (cooking gas) by 0.56% in January alone compared to the previous month where there was a decline of 0.6%.
The previous average cost of purchasing LPG for a 12.5kg gas cylinder cost about 4,154.28 Naira in December 2020 and about 4,177.55 Naira in January 2021. This statistic further shows that consumers in eastern and southern Nigerian paid the highest average price to refill their cylinders between 4,614.49 Naira to 4,791.67 Naira. While consumers in the northern part of Nigeria paid the lowest average price between 3, 291.19 Naira and 3,675.00 Naira to refill their 12.5kg cylinders.
The implication of these statistics and numbers revalidates the spike and increase in LPG usage in rural and urban areas alike. LPG is fast becoming the alternative fuel of choice within Nigeria as opposed to firewood and kerosene for cooking. The numbers also showed that as of January 2021, Nigerian consumers paid less for a litre of Kerosene than they did in December 2020. Hence, it can be foreseen that this product, LPG, will eventually be a status quo for Nigerians as there is already a gradual steady shift towards it.
