Did you Know you can Safely Convert your Petrol Vehicles to run on LPG?

Why is LPG so much cheaper than petrol?

There is an abundance of LPG in Nigeria, and the cost per gallon is cheaper than Petrol and Diesel.

How much does a conversion cost?

We will be able to give you a cost estimate depending on the type of vehicle, type of system and additional options.

Which vehicles are suitable for LPG conversion?

In general all petrol fueled vehicles can be adapted to run on LPG. There are a few exceptions but the majority of vehicles built 1990+ are best suited to conversion. All vehicles retain their petrol system so that there is a choice of which fuel to use.

Can anyone install a LPG system?

No. LPG conversion systems must be installed by a licensed LPG installer.

What about the vehicle warranty?

The vehicle manufacturer will not warrant the LPG system and they will not warrant any components that is affected by having the LPG system fitted or running the vehicle on LPG.

What about the LPG System warranty?

Warranty commences on the date of installation of the THLD STAG Technology on the vehicle. The Warranty Period for brand new vehicles (less than 5,000km) is 2 years (24 months) or 100,000km, whichever occurs first. For used vehicles that have travelled 5,000km or more at the date of installation, the Warranty Period is 1 years (12 months) or 50,000km, whichever occur first. The Warranty Period for new and used vehicles extends to any change of ownership.

How much space does the tank take up?

Traditionally the LPG cylinder is fitted under the parcel shelf. In some vehicles a donut shaped tank can be fitted in the spare wheel well. An external donut shaped tank is available for mounting underneath some vehicles.

If I convert my vehicle to LPG can I still drive on petrol?

Yes.

Plus by operating a dual fuel system you’ll almost double the kilometre range available to you. The petrol tank still remains in the car and the driver can switch from gas to petrol, or vice-versa.

What is LPG and where does it come from?

LPG – Liquefied Petroleum Gas (also known as Autogas) – is a hydrocarbon fuel made up predominantly from propane and butane. LPG is non-toxic, non-corrosive, low-polluting, free of lead and is in abundant supply. Nigeria is a net exporter of LPG. 40% of LPG comes from the refining of crude oil and 60% straight from field production. At atmospheric pressure it is a vapour and it can be liquefied under modest pressure.

Why is LPG also referred to as Autogas?

LPG and Autogas are just two different names for the same thing – Liquified Petroleum Gas – used as a fuel for vehicles. Autogas is the terminoligy used mainly within the automotive industry – but is also now being promoted by fuel companies publicly through advertising and signage as the automotive version of LPG.

How safe is LPG?

All LP Gas operated vehicles in Australia have been converted to international Standard. There is substantial evidence to show that an LP Gas powered vehicle is as safe, if not safer, than any other fuel available on the market today. This is reflected by the fact that no extra insurance premiums are imposed on straight gas or dual fuel applications in America and Europe.

What happens if an LPG vehicle is involved in an accident?

No additional risk!
You can have peace of mind that all LPG tanks are rigorously tested and all are considerably stronger than conventional fuel tanks. THLD cylinders are also fitted with in-built safety value in the event of fire and damage

Why should I convert my vehicle to LPG?

The reasons are varied; however, they can be generally be consolidated into three main categories – Safety, Economics and Environmental. It is easy to see the benefits of LP Gas

Availability of LPG throughout Nigeria?

Autogas stations exist in Edo and Lagos. Expansion is ongoing on all major trunk roads across the nation. Some of these are being pioneered by Oando, NIPCO and A.A. Rano.

How environmentally friendly is LPG?

When a vehicle has an LP Gas system correctly installed, tuned and maintained the vehicles impact on the environment is that it emits lower greenhouse emissions, less smog forming carcinogenic pollutants and particulates. LP Gas greatly reduces the damaging impact on human health and the environment. LP Gas is safe, viable and clean.

Will converting to LPG affect the engine’s performance?

The power output of engines with Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) is, when converted to run on LPG, usually only slightly lower than on petrol. The fuel economy of LPG-powered vehicles depends on a range of factors but on average, late model vehicles running on LPG use approximately 25 percent more fuel than petrol-powered equivalents. This is more than offset by the much lower cost of LPG.

Will I have to pay more to service a LPG vehicle?

LPG is cleaner than petrol so you might not service your vehicle as often as with petrol vehicles. As per your normal vehicle service at regular intervals, it is advised to have the LPG system serviced as well. Helping to off-set any extra service cost, Autogas reduces engine wear, enhancing the reliability of LPG-powered motor vehicles. There are several reasons for this:

  • In cold starting the vehicle does not require a choke cycle to warm up.
  • In addition Autogas does not wash the protective lubricant from cylinder walls.
  • Autogas significantly reduces the build-up of carbon on internal engine components, reducing engine wear.

For optimal Performance, Economy and Reliability of your LPG System, the vehicles electrical ignition system should be maintained to a good standard.
